Yala vs Udawalawe National Park: Which Should You Visit? (2026)

Yala vs Udawalawe National Park: Which Should You Visit?

Sri Lanka’s southern circuit contains two exceptional national parks within two hours of each other: Yala and Udawalawe. Both are magnificent — but they offer very different experiences. This honest comparison will help you decide which one is right for your trip (or whether you can fit both in).

The Short Answer

Visit Yala if you want leopards, diverse wildlife, and the most dramatic safari landscape in Sri Lanka.

Visit Udawalawe if you specifically want elephants — it has the highest elephant density in Sri Lanka and almost guarantees close, unhurried sightings.

Visit both if you have 2+ days in the south — they complement each other perfectly.

Yala National Park: Overview

Yala National Park covers 979 square kilometres and is Sri Lanka’s second-largest national park. Block 1, where tourist safaris operate, holds the world’s highest density of leopards — roughly one per square kilometre.

The landscape of Yala Block 1 is dramatic and varied: rocky coastal outcrops, open scrub grassland, lagoons, and dense jungle all within one safari circuit. This diversity of habitat supports extraordinary wildlife — not just leopards and elephants, but sloth bears, crocodiles, 200+ bird species, and more.

Best for: Travellers who want the full wildlife experience — leopards as the headline, with everything else as supporting cast.

Udawalawe National Park: Overview

Udawalawe covers 308 square kilometres in the central southern foothills. The landscape is more open — dominated by the Udawalawe reservoir and surrounding dry zone forest. It was created specifically to protect the elephant herds displaced by the reservoir’s construction.

Elephant sightings at Udawalawe are almost guaranteed — herds of 10, 20, even 50 elephants can be seen daily. The park also has water buffalo, crocodiles, and excellent birdlife, but it lacks the predator drama of Yala.

Best for: Travellers whose primary goal is elephant sightings, particularly families with children who want long, unrushed encounters with elephants.

Head-to-Head Comparison

Leopard sightings: Yala wins decisively. Udawalawe leopards exist but are very rarely seen.

Elephant sightings: Udawalawe wins. The density and regularity of elephant sightings at Udawalawe is unmatched in Sri Lanka.

Overall wildlife diversity: Yala wins. Sloth bears, crocodiles, sloth bears, deer, 200+ bird species — Yala’s variety is exceptional.

Landscape and scenery: Yala wins. The coastal rocky terrain and varied habitats make Yala visually more dramatic.

Crowds: Udawalawe tends to be quieter. Yala Block 1 can get busy during peak season.

Distance from Colombo: Similar — both around 4–5 hours by road.

Entrance fees: Similar government fee structure.

Can You Do Both in One Trip?

Absolutely. Udawalawe and Yala are approximately 90 minutes apart by road. A common itinerary is:

Day 1: Arrive Udawalawe → Evening safari or rest
Day 2: Full day Udawalawe safari → Drive to Tissamaharama (1.5 hrs)
Day 3: Yala Leopard Safari at dawn → Afternoon rest
Day 4: Yala Full Day Safari or depart

This gives you the complete southern Sri Lanka wildlife experience — elephants in Udawalawe and leopards in Yala.

Our Recommendation

If you only have time for one park and you have never been on a Sri Lankan safari: choose Yala. The diversity of wildlife, the drama of the landscape, and the possibility of seeing a wild leopard in its natural territory is an experience that very few places on Earth can match.

If elephants are your primary passion and you want long, peaceful encounters without the pressure of searching for a predator: Udawalawe is perfect.
