Staying somewhere other than right next to Yala’s main gate? Menaka Safari picks up guests across the whole southern gateway area — not just Tissamaharama town. This guide covers the towns and villages we collect guests from, roughly how far each one sits from the park, and what to expect on the drive in.
As a jeep-and-guide safari operator, we don’t run our own hotels or lodges, so we can’t speak for every property’s exact distance to the gate — but we know this road network well, and we’re happy to confirm your specific pickup time by WhatsApp before booking.
Tissamaharama
Tissamaharama is the main gateway town and where most visitors base themselves. The town centre sits roughly 25–30 minutes from Yala’s main Palatupana entrance, depending on exactly where you’re staying — hotels along the Kirinda road tend to be a little closer, while those nearer Tissa Wewa lake are a touch further out. Free pickup is available for hotels within Tissamaharama town.
Kataragama
Kataragama is best known as a major pilgrimage town, about 30–40 minutes from Tissamaharama itself. If you’re staying here, the closer option is often the Katagamuwa entrance on Yala’s northern side (roughly 15–30 minutes, around 7–14 km depending on the exact route, from Kataragama), which also tends to be quieter than the main Palatupana gate — see our full entrance comparison guide for more on the difference. We can arrange pickup from Kataragama and route you through whichever entrance makes sense for your safari time slot.
Weerawila
Weerawila sits along the same road between Tissamaharama and Kataragama, close to Weerawila Lake and the bird sanctuary. It’s a convenient pickup point if your hotel is on this stretch of road rather than in Tissamaharama town itself, and the added driving time to the park is modest.
Debarawewa
Debarawewa is effectively a neighbouring suburb of Tissamaharama, just a few minutes further along the main road. Guests staying here are picked up on the same schedule as Tissamaharama town and see very little difference in total drive time to the park.
Sithulpawwa area
A handful of camps and eco-stays sit near the ancient Sithulpawwa rock temple, which is inside the park’s wider boundary area. If you’re staying this close, you’re often nearer to the park than guests in Tissamaharama itself — let us know your exact property when you book and we’ll confirm the shortest route.
