Safari Lodge Yala: Where to Stay for Your Yala National Park Safari (2026)
There are 2 kinds of places to stay for a Yala safari. Lodges and tented camps along the coast at Palatupana and Kirinda sit 5 to 15 minutes from the park. Hotels and guesthouses in Tissamaharama and the nearby villages sit 20 to 40 minutes away and cost much less.
Menaka Safari is a jeep and guide service based in Tissamaharama. We don’t own a lodge, and none of the properties on this page pay us to appear here. This guide compares the real options: where each one is, what it costs, what the rate includes, and how your choice changes the safari itself.
Park update, September 2026: The Department of Wildlife Conservation has closed Yala Blocks 1 and 2 from 14 September to 15 October 2026 because of drought. The other blocks remain open and we are still running safaris. If your lodge dates fall before 15 October, message us before you book the room so we can tell you which block and gate we’ll use.

Where the lodges are
Most well-known Yala lodges sit on a short stretch of coast between Kirinda and the Palatupana gate. The land here is scrub jungle and sand dunes running into the Indian Ocean, with no fence between the hotels and the park. Elephants, wild boar and monkeys walk through hotel grounds, and some properties send a staff member to walk you to your room after dark.
A second, smaller group of camps sits on the Kataragama side of the park, near the Katagamuwa gate. That gate is usually quieter than Palatupana, with fewer jeeps in the morning queue.
Then there’s Tissamaharama. Tissa is the town most Yala safaris start from, and it has the widest range of rooms, restaurants and shops. It’s 20 to 40 minutes from the gate depending on where you stay and which entrance you use. Kataragama, Weerawila and Debarawewa are close by and work the same way. Our pickup locations guide lists the distances from each.
The safari lodges at Yala, one by one
Wild Coast Tented Lodge
Wild Coast is the most photographed lodge at Yala. It has 28 tented Cocoon suites set around waterholes, a short walk from a rough, empty beach. The main building uses curved bamboo roofs shaped to echo the boulders on the shore. It belongs to Resplendent Ceylon, the hotel group started by the Dilmah tea family, and it is a Relais & Châteaux member.
Rates are full board. A 2023 review listed the Cocoon pool suite from about GBP 981 a night for 2 people, covering meals, drinks, laundry and 1 game drive a day. Prices have moved since then, so check the lodge’s own site.
It suits travelers for whom the lodge is part of the trip, such as a honeymoon or a milestone birthday. If you mainly want time inside the park, you’ll pay a lot for a room you only use between drives.
Uga Chena Huts
Chena Huts is the closest private lodge to the Palatupana gate, about a 5-minute drive. It has 18 cabins spread over roughly 7 acres, each with its own plunge pool, deck and free-standing bath. The cabins are spaced so they don’t look onto each other, and elephants sometimes walk along the beach in front of the bar.
Uga sells Chena Huts as all-inclusive. According to the Uga website, the rate covers meals, drinks, safaris and park fees. That makes the headline price high but predictable. It’s a popular choice for couples; see our honeymoon and couples guide for how to plan the safari side of that trip.
Jetwing Yala
Jetwing Yala is one of the biggest hotels near the park, with 80 rooms on 38 acres of beachfront at Palatupana. It’s about 10 minutes by road from the park. It has a large pool, a spa, several restaurants and bars, and wildlife sometimes comes up to the pool edge.
Jetwing says 10 of its rooms were built to be wheelchair accessible, which is rare this close to the park. Families and groups who want a full resort with space for children often end up here. Safaris are arranged on top of the room rate, either through the hotel or with an independent jeep operator.
Cinnamon Wild Yala
Cinnamon Wild sits at Kirinda on the park boundary and has been operating since 2002 (it was called Chaaya Wild before a rebrand). It has 68 chalets: 60 jungle chalets set among the trees and 8 beach chalets raised on stilts facing the sea. There’s a pool and a rooftop bar with views across the scrub and lagoon.
Elephants, wild boar and water buffalo pass through the grounds, and guests have reported leopards nearby. Nobody can promise that. Among the park-edge hotels, Cinnamon Wild is usually the lower-priced option, which is why tour operators use it so often.
Leopard Trails Yala
Leopard Trails runs a small camp of 8 air-conditioned tents and suites near the Katagamuwa gate, on the quieter Kataragama side of the park. It’s a mobile camp, so the exact site can shift. The all-inclusive package covers the tent, all meals and drinks, 2 game drives a day with a naturalist, and park entry fees. The camp recommends staying at least 2 nights.
It has a Junior Ranger programme for children, where kids learn tracks and bird calls. Families who want the tented-camp feeling without a large resort tend to like it.
Other tented camps
Several smaller camps run along the park edge, and some operate only in certain months. We’ve written separate guides to Yala safari camping and glamping and to Kulu Safaris Yala if a tent is what you’re after.
We are not affiliated with any of the properties above, and we earn nothing if you book them.
Staying in Tissamaharama instead
Most of our guests stay in Tissamaharama. The main reason is price, since a clean guesthouse room in Tissa costs a small fraction of a night at a park-edge lodge. The second reason is choice. Tissa has dozens of guesthouses and mid-range hotels, several with pools, plus restaurants, pharmacies, ATMs and the lake.
The trade is time. A morning safari from Tissa means leaving around 5:00 to 5:30 am so you reach the gate as it opens at 6:00 am. From a Palatupana lodge you might leave 20 minutes later. For most people that difference is small.
Kataragama is worth a look if you plan to visit the Kataragama temple complex, which many Indian and Sri Lankan pilgrims combine with a safari. Weerawila and Debarawewa are quieter villages with a few homestays and lakeside guesthouses.
For hotel and guesthouse advice in these towns, see our Yala safari hotel guide and the Tissamaharama travel guide.
What a Yala safari lodge costs
Lodge prices near Yala fall into 3 rough tiers, and they change with season and demand:
- Luxury camps and cabins (Wild Coast, Chena Huts, Leopard Trails): among the most expensive rooms in Sri Lanka, sold mostly as all-inclusive packages.
- Park-edge hotels (Jetwing Yala, Cinnamon Wild Yala): well below the luxury camps, with proper hotel facilities and a pool. Safaris cost extra.
- Tissamaharama and nearby towns: the cheapest tier by a wide margin, from simple guesthouses to comfortable mid-range hotels.
Comparing these tiers on the nightly rate alone gives you the wrong answer. An all-inclusive camp rate already covers the jeep, the park tickets and every meal. A room-only rate in Tissa covers the bed.
Example: 2 adults, 1 night, 1 morning safari. At an all-inclusive camp you pay one number. At a Tissa guesthouse you pay for the room, then the jeep, then the park tickets for each person, then meals. The Tissa total still comes out far lower in almost every case, and the gap is smaller than the room rates suggest.
Park entry tickets are charged per person on top of any jeep price. Foreign visitors pay a different rate from Sri Lankan residents, and there are service charges and taxes on top. Our Yala safari cost guide and hidden costs guide break down every line.
Lodge game drives or your own jeep
Every lodge near Yala can arrange a safari. The question is whether you use theirs or book a jeep separately.
Lodge game drives are easy. The vehicle collects you at reception, the naturalist knows the lodge’s routine, and at all-inclusive places the drive is already paid for. If you’re staying at Chena Huts or Leopard Trails, booking an outside jeep as well usually means paying twice.
An independent jeep makes more sense in these cases:
- You’re staying room-only or on a meal plan, so the safari isn’t included anyway.
- You want a full-day safari, which lets you stay in the park through the middle of the day and reach areas that half-day drives skip.
- You want a private jeep for just your group, with no strangers and no fixed return time.
- You want a specific block, such as the quieter Block 5, and your lodge’s drives only go to one area.
We run morning, afternoon and full-day safaris in Toyota Hilux 4×4 jeeps with an experienced local driver-guide. We pick up from hotels and guesthouses in Tissamaharama, Kataragama, Weerawila and Debarawewa, and from the park-edge hotels on the Palatupana and Kirinda road. Details are on our Yala safari jeep service page, and how long a Yala safari takes covers the timings for each package.
Which gate and block your lodge is near
Yala is divided into numbered blocks. Block 1 has the highest leopard density and the most jeeps, and it’s entered through Palatupana. That’s why most luxury lodges cluster near that gate.
Lodges near the Katagamuwa gate put you closer to quieter parts of the park. Our Yala gate guide compares the entrances, and Block 1 vs Block 5 explains what each area is like.
During the 2026 drought closure, Block 1 is shut until 15 October. A Palatupana lodge booked for early October won’t give you the head start into Block 1 that it normally would. Check with us before you pay a premium for location.
Families, older travelers, wheelchair users and Indian travelers
Families with young children usually do best with a pool and a short drive to the gate. Jetwing Yala and Cinnamon Wild both fit that. Leopard Trails has its Junior Ranger programme. Our safari with kids guide covers age guidance and safety.
Grandparents and older travelers should weigh the early start and the time in a bumpy jeep. A park-edge hotel cuts 20 to 30 minutes of road each way. See our guide for elderly travelers.
Wheelchair users have one clear option among the park-edge hotels: Jetwing Yala’s 10 accessible rooms. Standard Yala safari jeeps, including ours, are not wheelchair accessible. Our wheelchair and mobility guide explains what is and isn’t possible inside the park.
Travelers from India often ask about vegetarian and Jain food. The big resorts can usually cater with notice, and Tissa has more places serving vegetarian food. Read our vegetarian and Jain food guide, the Yala guide for Indian travelers, and our notes on Hindi-speaking guides and currency.
How to choose
- You want the lodge itself to be the memory, and budget is flexible: Wild Coast Tented Lodge or Uga Chena Huts.
- You want a small tented camp with game drives included: Leopard Trails Yala.
- You want a full resort with a big pool, close to the park: Jetwing Yala.
- You want to sleep beside the park at a lower price: Cinnamon Wild Yala.
- You want the lowest total cost and more food choices: Tissamaharama, with an independent jeep.
- You’re combining the safari with the Kataragama temple: Kataragama town, or Leopard Trails on that side of the park.
Booking tips
- Book the famous lodges early. Wild Coast, Chena Huts and Leopard Trails have fewer than 30 rooms each, and peak months fill months ahead. Tissa guesthouses usually have space at short notice.
- Compare full costs. Add the jeep, park tickets and meals to any room-only rate before comparing it with an all-inclusive price.
- Check park status for your dates. Yala blocks can close for drought, usually around September to mid-October. The 2026 closure runs 14 September to 15 October.
- Ask what your lodge’s drive includes. Shared or private, how many hours, which block, and whether park fees are in the price.
- Send us your hotel name when you book the jeep, so we can plan the pickup time and route.
- Choose your block and timing with care. Sightings depend mostly on the block, the time of day and the season. Where you sleep has a smaller effect.
FAQ
What is the best safari lodge in Yala?
It depends on budget and style. Wild Coast Tented Lodge and Uga Chena Huts are the top luxury choices. Jetwing Yala suits families who want a full resort. Cinnamon Wild Yala is the lower-cost park-edge hotel. Leopard Trails is the pick for a small, all-inclusive tented camp.
Are any of these lodges inside Yala National Park?
The private lodges sit on the park edge or in the unfenced buffer zone, so wildlife moves through them freely. The Department of Wildlife Conservation runs a few basic bungalows inside the park, booked directly through the department.
Is a park-edge lodge worth the extra cost over Tissamaharama?
If the lodge experience matters to you, yes. If your goal is time in the park, Tissa saves a lot of money for roughly 20 extra minutes on the road each morning.
Do I have to use my lodge’s safari jeep?
No. You can book any licensed jeep operator. At all-inclusive lodges the drives are already paid for, so an outside jeep only makes sense for a full-day or private trip.
Is Yala open right now?
Blocks 1 and 2 are closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026 because of drought. The other blocks remain open, and we are running safaris there.
How far ahead should I book a Yala safari lodge?
For Wild Coast, Chena Huts and Leopard Trails, book several months ahead for peak season. Tissamaharama guesthouses often have rooms a few days out.
Can Menaka Safari pick me up from my lodge?
Yes. We collect from Tissamaharama, Kataragama, Weerawila, Debarawewa and the park-edge hotels at Palatupana and Kirinda. Send us your hotel name when you book.
Does Menaka Safari run a lodge?
No. We run jeeps and guides only. The lodges on this page are independent, and we have no commercial link to any of them.
